A bit of history…
The historical area in which Hotel Oxford is situated is the elegant "Ludovisi-Sallustiano"
neighbourhood, which , in times past, was a well-to-do suburb where
families owned sumptuous villas. Guests of Hotel Oxford can visit the
ruins of " Horti Sallustiani" (about 50 metres away) where the poet
Sallustio, once he retired, wrote his masterpieces. This area, after the
fall of the Roman Empire, turned countryside and wasn't retouched until
the 17th century when pope Urbano VIII had the Barberini Palace built.
Via Veneto acquired fame at the beginning of '900 with its
characteristic coffee-bar and luxury hotels. In the 1960's, the
sumptuous street was frequented by high society figures, as well as
famous actors, writers and artists (period of "La Dolce Vita").
